Why We Don’t Hide CCTV Cables in Your Walls
At Crosby Intruder Alarms, we pride ourselves on providing top-quality security solutions that are both effective and safe. One common question we receive is why we don’t install CCTV cables within wall cavities. While it might seem like a convenient solution, there are several compelling reasons why we avoid this practice.
Building Regulations: A Matter of Safety
- Structural Integrity: Wall cavities are essential for a building’s structural stability. Running cables through them can potentially compromise this, leading to long-term issues.
- Fire Safety: Electrical cables, even when properly installed, can pose a fire risk. Enclosing them within a wall can hinder fire prevention and containment efforts.
- Damp and Moisture: Wall cavities are susceptible to damp and moisture. Exposing cables to these conditions can lead to corrosion, short circuits, and system failure.
Practical Considerations
- Accessibility: Cables concealed within walls are difficult to access for maintenance, repairs, or upgrades. If a cable fails, it can be a costly and disruptive process to locate and replace it.
- Future-proofing: Technology evolves rapidly. Hiding cables in walls can limit your ability to upgrade your CCTV system in the future.
- Potential Damage: Drilling into walls to install or repair cables can cause damage to pipes, wires, and other components within the cavity.
A Better Approach
While hiding cables might seem aesthetically pleasing, we believe that a more practical and reliable approach is to use discreet cable management solutions. These can include:
- Cable trunking & conduit: This provides a neat and tidy way to conceal cables while maintaining accessibility.
- Concealed cable runs: We can often route cables and keep them hidden.
By opting for these methods, we ensure that your CCTV system is not only effective but also safe and maintainable.
At Crosby Intruder Alarms, we are committed to providing you with the best possible security solution. If you have any questions about CCTV installation or cable management, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

1958-2017
He had a wicked sense of humour and we often were on the receiving end of his jokes, but in all honesty, he could take a joke as well. I remember a conversation that I had with one long standing customer who said that they missed Peter coming in to see them because he “gave them hell” and the conversation was finished by her saying “and we gave it him back”. We all miss that as well.
